Seating Chart Maker

Paste a class list into this classroom seating chart, or use the same rows and columns for an event or an office. No account: set the rows and columns, then randomize. Lock a seat, keep two students apart, drag to swap, print, or open projector mode.

What this tool does

This seating chart maker places each name into a rectangular seating chart generator grid. Lock a seat to keep it out of the next shuffle, drag to swap, then print one page or present the chart.

Seating charts

Seating chart examples

Classroom seating chart

Set the desk rows and seats per row, paste the class list, and randomize a starting classroom seating chart. Drag students after you account for accessibility and learning needs.

Wedding or event seating chart

Use a simple row grid for a ceremony, workshop, or banquet draft. A wedding or event seating chart made here is a starting layout, not a substitute for household or table-conflict rules.

Office seating plan

Paste the people who need a desk today, choose the rows and columns that match the room, and randomize an office seating plan you can rearrange before it is posted.

Instructions

How to make a seating chart

Paste or enter the name list

Type one person per line, or paste a list from a roster. The seating chart maker stores that list in this browser so you can reopen it later.

Choose rows and columns

Set how many rows and how many seats are in each row. Empty seats stay visible when the list is shorter than the grid.

Randomize the seating chart

Choose Randomize seats. The seating chart generator fills the grid from the shuffled list and leaves extra names unseated when the room is full.

Lock, swap, then print or present

Lock a seat to keep that person in place the next time you randomize. Drag a filled seat onto another seat to swap them, or activate one seat and then the next. Choose two names to keep apart, then randomize again. Print view fits the grid on one page, and Present opens large-type projector mode.

Troubleshooting

Checks before you share the chart

The name list is empty

When: Randomize seats stays unavailable until at least one name is entered.

Why: A seating chart needs people before it can assign seats.

Try: Paste one name per line, then randomize the grid again.

More names than seats

When: The status line lists people who did not fit in the current rows and columns.

Why: The grid only has one person per seat, so extra names wait outside the chart.

Try: Add rows or columns, or remove people who do not need a seat, then randomize again.

Trust

How the seating chart is arranged

Randomize first, then rearrange

Randomize seats shuffles unlocked names into unlocked seats. A locked seat stays as it is, and a keep-apart pair is moved when the grid has a free side.

  • Unlocked names share the open seats. A locked seat is skipped, including a locked empty seat.
  • Keep-apart means the two names do not sit side by side or directly in front of each other. Diagonal seats are allowed, so a 2 by 2 grid can still separate one pair.
  • If both seats in a pair are locked next to each other, or the room has no open seat that separates them, the status line says they could not be separated.

The chart stays in this browser

The name list and the current seating chart, including locks and keep-apart pairs, use local storage on this device. Random 42 does not receive the names or the finished chart.

  • Reopening the seating chart maker on the same browser restores the name list and the last arrangement.
  • Clearing site data removes the saved names and the saved chart from this browser.

Boundaries

What this seating chart does not decide

A grid is not a floor plan

The chart is a rows-and-columns draft. It does not draw a scaled room, named tables, or reserved accessible seats.

Review before you use the result

  • A keep-apart pair is one seating rule. Review accessibility, safety, and households before you post the chart.
  • Named tables and desk capacities still live on the classroom, wedding/event, and office seating pages.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does the seating chart maker save my chart?

Yes. The name list and the current seats, including locks, are saved in this browser and restored after a refresh. They are not uploaded.

Can I swap seats or lock one after I randomize?

Yes. Drag one seat onto another to swap them, or activate the first seat and then the next. Lock a seat when that person should stay put the next time you randomize.

How do I show the chart on a projector or print it?

Choose Present for fullscreen type sized for the back of the room. Choose Print view to fit the grid on one A4 or Letter page.

Is this the same as the classroom, wedding, or office seating pages?

Those pages keep their own scenario wording and stay canonical to themselves. Each one links here when you want the shared rows-and-columns seating chart maker.
