Random Choice Generator

Add the options you are actually willing to accept, keep the chances equal or set clear weights, and get a direct result without a wheel animation.

Paste one complete choice per line. Punctuation and spaces stay part of the choice.

What this tool does

A random choice generator samples an option from a user-provided list. Optional weights change relative probability, while replacement settings determine whether a result can return later.

Direct choices

Ways to use a random choice generator

Pick from acceptable plans

Enter meals, activities, routes, or meeting formats after removing choices that are unavailable or unsafe.

Choose a prompt or topic

Use non-repeating mode to work through a prepared set of questions, exercises, or discussion topics.

Express a preference transparently

Apply visible weights when some acceptable options should occur more often, then explain that distribution to the participants.

Instructions

How to configure a choice

List only acceptable options

Enter one option per line and resolve any safety, budget, availability, or consent constraints before randomizing.

Choose equal or weighted chances

Leave the default equal setting for a uniform choice, or add positive weights that reflect an intentional distribution.

Set the repeat behavior

Allow replacement for independent repeated picks, or remove each result until you reset the list.

Generate and apply the result

Run the choice, copy it if useful, and decide whether the selected option should stay eligible for the next round.

Troubleshooting

When a result cannot be generated

No acceptable options are active

When: The list is empty, blank, or every option has been removed.

Why: A random choice requires at least one active option.

Try: Add or restore an option you are genuinely prepared to use.

A weight cannot be interpreted

When: A weight is negative, nonnumeric, or all active weights are zero.

Why: The engine cannot build a valid probability distribution from those values.

Try: Use positive numeric weights or return all options to equal chance.

The non-repeating pool is exhausted

When: Every active option has already been selected without replacement.

Why: Nothing remains eligible in the current cycle.

Try: Reset the cycle, add new options, or enable replacement deliberately.

Trust

Probability and private inputs

The result follows the visible option set

Randomness can choose among the entries, but it cannot make an incomplete option set or undisclosed weighting fair.

  • Equal weights produce equal chances for the active entries at the moment of selection.
  • A weight of two gives an option twice the relative chance of an option weighted one; weights are not scores or endorsements.
  • Without replacement, earlier results leave the pool and later probabilities necessarily change.

Choices and results are not saved

Your option list, weights, settings, and results are used for the active task and are not saved by Random 42.

  • Random 42 does not create a saved decision, shared result URL, or cross-device history.
  • Refreshing or closing the tool clears the current options and results.

Boundaries

Decisions the tool should not make

Randomness does not replace judgment

Use this generator only after the available choices have been checked for consequences the tool cannot understand.

Review before you use the result

  • Do not use a random result for medical, legal, financial, safety, consent, or disciplinary decisions.
  • The tool does not retrieve nearby restaurants, weather, prices, schedules, or other live availability data.
  • A weighted result reflects the entered numbers, not an objective recommendation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this different from the wheel spinner?

Yes. It provides a direct result without a wheel animation and emphasizes list settings, weights, and repeat behavior.

Do weights have to add up to 100?

No. Weights are relative. Values 1, 1, and 2 create the same proportions as 25, 25, and 50.

Can an option be selected more than once?

Yes when replacement is enabled. Disable replacement when each option should leave the pool after it is selected.

Are my choices stored online?

No. Options, weights, and results are used for the active task and are not saved by Random 42.
