What this tool does

A random name picker samples one or more entries from a normalized list. Without-replacement mode removes each selected entry from the eligible pool until the list resets.

People selection

When a name picker is useful

Choose a volunteer

Pick one person from an eligible list for a demonstration, opening task, or low-stakes activity.

Select several participants

Draw a requested number of distinct people for a panel, activity, or round when repeat selections are disabled.

Rotate through a full list

Use without-replacement mode to work through the current pool before anyone becomes eligible again.

Instructions

How to pick names

Paste the eligible names

Enter one display name per line and use initials or another label when two different people share the same name.

Review the cleaned list

Check which blank lines and exact duplicate labels were removed before treating the list as the eligible pool.

Set the pick count and repeat rule

Choose one or more results, then decide whether a selected name remains eligible for later picks.

Pick and record the result

Run the selection, copy the displayed names if needed, and reset only when you want to restore the full pool.

Troubleshooting

List and selection issues

No eligible names remain

When: The list is empty or every name has been selected without replacement.

Why: The picker has no active entry from which to sample.

Try: Add eligible names or reset the completed selection cycle.

Two people share one label

When: The normalized list treats identical display names as duplicates.

Why: Keeping an identical label twice could make one apparent person receive more than one chance by accident.

Try: Use distinct labels such as Jordan A. and Jordan B., then review the cleaned list again.

The requested count is too large

When: Without-replacement mode asks for more names than remain eligible.

Why: A distinct result cannot contain more people than the current eligible pool.

Try: Reduce the pick count, restore names, or enable replacement deliberately.

Trust

Eligibility, chance, and privacy

Every eligible entry receives the configured chance

The picker samples the cleaned active list; it cannot judge whether the eligibility list itself is fair or complete.

  • With replacement on and no weights, each active entry has the same chance on every independent pick.
  • Without replacement, a selected name leaves the pool, so the probabilities change as the cycle progresses.
  • Eligibility decisions, duplicate labels, opt-outs, and required exclusions must be resolved before the draw.

Names are not saved

The pasted list, eligible pool, and results are used for the active task and are not saved by Random 42.

  • Random 42 does not create a saved list, account, or permanent result link.
  • Closing or refreshing the tool clears the current list and selection history.

Boundaries

What the picker cannot verify

A random pick does not establish eligibility

The tool selects from the list it receives and cannot verify consent, attendance, employment status, contest rules, or identity.

Review before you use the result

  • Use the classroom-specific picker when attendance and a complete-class cycle matter.
  • Use a raffle workflow when prizes, multiple awards, and a shareable receipt are required.
  • Do not present this picker as an independently verified or legally audited selection.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How are duplicate names handled?

Blank lines are ignored and identical normalized labels are kept once. Give different people unique display labels before picking.

What does without replacement mean?

A selected name leaves the eligible pool and cannot be selected again until you reset the cycle.

Can I pick several names at once?

Yes. Choose a count that does not exceed the available pool when replacement is disabled.

Are the names saved online?

No. Names and results are used for the active task and are not sent to Random 42.
